Fracking Shell
South Africa: Royal Dutch Shell is applying to the South African Government for a licence to explore the Karoo with the intention of exploiting possible natural gas reserves through a process called Fracking.
The Karoo may appear a hostile, arid place but a brief visit to this dramatic and majestic land will charm anyone. Obviously drill shafts dotted across the landscape would not add to it’s beauty.
The little water there is in the Karoo often exists in underground reservoirs and will most probably be contaminated by the noxious cocktail of chemicals used in the gas extraction process. The further use of water - an increasingly scarce resource in South Africa - to pump down the drill holes and drive out the gas is quite possibly a tragedy in the making.
Here’s some sensible people to connect with about this.
